MetaManagement Group is a São Paulo-based management consulting firm. We provide services aimed at dramatically improving our clients´ condition. In intimate cooperation with our clients, we strive to implement superior management processes, to trigger, facilitate and execute change, and to continuously deliver measurable results.

As a sole practitioner, Niels functions as an advisor to firms of diverse industries, helping them solve (for themselves) their problems and management issues. He sees his role as one of helping clients and client teams to generate alternative action options, explore the pro's, con's, risks and costs of those options, to provide a recommendation but, ultimately, allow clients to make their own decisions.

For example, in case of beyond budgeting transformation work, the client firm may form an internal guiding coalition to be responsible for leading the change initiative. Niels then serves as the guide to that coalition: providing orientation regarding management model coherence, helping them write the case for change, helpint them agree on action steps and a work plan, suggesting various forms of generating change, contributing to the generation of creative ideas, challenging thinking and shepherding the process through to a conclusion.

Among the managerial topic areas he works on management model transformation, are management and business processes, finance management, organization, compensation and other reward systems. A conceptual framework around all this is the Beyond Budgeting model, which aims at making organizations fit for the 21st century by turning them more decentralized and flexible.

MetaManagement Group is part of a network of research organizations (such as the Beyond Budgeting Round Table and universities) and consulting, professional service and software firms. Niels thus also provides help to clients to find suitable providers for additional services or specific implementation work.
In addition to his counseling work, Niels spends time founding acting as a director for the Beyond Budgeting Round Table (BBRT), developing methods, making presentations and facilitating workshops and training sessions.


 What MetaManagement means to us

Meta is a prefix (not a word on its own) which means "behind" or "hidden".

Meta implies the part of something that is not immediately visible, is in the background, but which is there nonetheless and has an effect. An example: We get the word metaphysics, the study of the non-physical universe, from meta.

Similarly, metamanagement means the observation and influencing of what’s behind the visible parts of management as a practice. In our work, we question the assumptions and practices of management in the client organization – going beneath the apparent and proposing and implementing processes and tools coherent to the overall strategy, needs and desired state. All aimed at sustainably improving the client’s condition.

Note that in Spanish and Portuguese languages, “meta” also exists as a word on its own, meaning “goal” or “target”. MetaManagement in this way can be interpreted as facilitating an ever more target- and result-oriented management model.


  Consulting Philosophy

One of the fundamentals of our success is to utilize the existing talents and resources of the organization to enhance customer satisfaction and business goals, by directing talents and resources outward, not inward.

MetaManagement´s philosophy of consulting is that it is better for a firm to conduct their own analyses and reach their own conclusions, stimulated and guided by our input. We restrict our presentations at meetings to events that are designed to accomplish specific goals for the organization.


 MetaManagement Group’s Practice

MetaManagement Group is based in São Paulo and we expect the location of clients in 2008 to be about 30% in Europe and 70% in South America.

Our fees are not hour- or day-based, as most consultants use to charge, but based on agreements on the value added for the client, plus travel expenses. These fees are subject to an unconditional client satisfaction guarantee: If when the work is done, the client does not feel that full value was received, then the client decides how much it was worth and how much to pay (if anything). Should the client choose to invoke the guarantee, we encourage and welcome the client to call and discuss with him their feedback and reasons for their disappointment.

Consequently, there is no charge for time spent examining material provided by clients. We encourage clients to send extensive materials in advance to any consulting work, so that initial meetings can be immediately customized. The only exception is when the client specifically requests that analytical work be done. Similarly, we do not charge for telephone consultation time, unless that time is excessive.


 A Professional Relationship

Niels practices total client confidentiality. Thus, the name of clients he has worked for are only disclosed if the client agrees to this procedure.

Niels Pflaeging is a sole practitioner. So if you hire him, you get Niels. In consulting assignments, he always teams up with other independent consultants, BBRT directors, or consulting firms (usually smaller ones).
